About us

The Farm Retail Association (FRA) began its life as the the Farm Shop and PYO Association (FSPA) on October 11, 1979 at the Farmpick Conference in Birmingham.

Realising that the farm retail industry had no supporting body, a group of like minded farmers took the reigns and began their own. To this day, we adhere to the same principles, supporting, sharing and learning with one another. A great many people and businesses have benefited from membership of the Association over the years, many being farmers who have had to learn retailing from scratch.

Above all, the association has enabled many lasting friendships and local groups to develop. We have shared a drink; shared our bright ideas and our problems; emulated each other’s successes and tried to avoid each other’s failures. We have a network of friends all over the country where we can call for a chat.

The association is proud and thankful to have always had a passionate team of people championing the families, teams and businesses who grow and sell Great British produce, and we’re always delighted to welcome friendly faces old and new.

The Council acts on behalf of the Association and its members, and is responsible for establishing the policy of the Association and management of its affairs and activities. Rob Copley

Rob Copley, Chairman

Rob Copley is the owner of Pontefract based Farmer Copleys alongside his wife, Heather. With the desire for amazing food, fantastic local produce and a warm welcome, Farmer Copleys has also showcased through its Moo Café, how Britain and especially Yorkshire can compete with the very best the culinary world has to offer.

Winning multiple awards including the prestigious Guild of Fine Food Farm Shop of the Year and Farm Shop of the Year at the Yorkshire Post Rural Awards amongst many others, Rob has transformed Farmer Copleys into one of the best Farm Shops in the UK.

Rob has several other roles, having recently been appointed Chairman of the Farm Retail Association (FRA). He has a passion for championing the people and businesses who grow and sell Great British produce and supporting new and existing businesses in the industry through knowledge transfer. Rob is also a Trustee for the Great Yorkshire Agricultural Show, a role he has proudly held since 2011

Karen Deans

I have been MD of premium frozen food supplier field fare since 2003. field fare supplies frozen loose serve fruits, vegetables, fish and bakery products, ready meals and desserts to close to 400 stockists, mainly farm shops throughout the UK; from Dornoch to the Channel Islands. Sold in branded freezers, all of our products are carefully sourced from specialist producers; supporting independents, while ensuring authenticity and excellence. Field fare is based on a working farm in Kent, and has many longstanding relationships with farm retailers, some for over 25 years, where we now work with the second generation that has taken over the family business. At field fare we actively promote environmental solutions, not least in our ongoing campaign for all stockists of field fare’s packaging-free, loose lines to offer a Bring Your Own container option to their customers.
I live in Kent with my husband and two sons.

Emma Mosey

Emma runs Minskip Farm Shop in Boroughbridge with her husband Ben.  They left careers as a novelist and an exploration geologist to purchase their farm shop 3 years ago, and haven’t looked back.  Emma enjoys being on the council to learn from more established farm shop owners.

Janet Harrison

I was born in Cheshire and moved to Abbey Leys Farm, High Legh when I married Tim 34 years ago. Tim and I converted the farm to organic status in 2001 where we produce free range organic eggs, potatoes and cereals. We have a small farm shop where our daughter is involved closely with the shop management.

We set up the Abbey Leys Community Farmers Market in 2004. A very popular market

trading monthly and located on our farm. I am currently a North West representative on the council of FRA. A very enjoyable voluntary role. I enjoy bringing farmers market members together to meet and discuss best practice.

Kay Croot

Croots Farm Shop was established in 2008 and we have a Butchery, farm shop & 45 seat café. We are sheep farmers based on a small 72 acre farm in Derbyshire, but with wonderful views and we also have Shire horses!  We have been members for several years, but I’ve only recently started to get more involved, attending regional meetings as well as the conference and then a couple of years ago was asked to join the council. My background is in retail, having worked for Aldi, Asda and Boots mainly in buying and some HR roles for 25 years, but I joined the family business 5 years ago and I’m now focusing on the next stage of growth for our business. Its been really exciting to see the changes in the FRA over the last two years. I’ve personally learnt loads, made some great friends and I’m really looking forward to continuing my involvement in the future

Johnathan Winchester

Jonathan is the Chief Executive of insight6, one of the country’s thought leading brands on Customer Experience.  insight6 specialise in transforming the CX within more than 1,000 UK businesses, from multi-nationals to SME’s.

Jonathan was educated at Harrods on their management course and then moved to Australia where he established Shopper Anonymous. Over 8 years the business became one of the leading mystery shopping and market research businesses within the Australian region. He then returned to the UK and replicated the same success, with a team of 25 Customer Experience Directors supporting their clients across the UK and Ireland.

Jonathan grew up on his grandparents Sussex farm and loves nothing better than spending time with farm retailing with specific focus on making it world class.

As a well-known public speaker and mentor offering experienced business advice and thought-provoking guidance, he regularly speaks at large events and not-so-long ago shared a platform with Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple.

Calcott Hall is a family run business and our aim is to provide a pleasant and friendly shopping experience, very different from large supermarkets. We grow a range of vegetables and fruit throughout the year and source locally whenever possible.

McTurks have been farming at Calcott Hall for over 40 years. Our farm is 120 acres (equivalent to about 70 football pitches) and was formerly a dairy farm. From humble beginnings selling potatoes and sweetcorn from boxes in 1974, much has happened at Calcott Hall and we have grown considerably. We renovated an old Essex barn in 1983, and have gradually used more and more of it as our shop needs have grown.

Denstone Hall Farm Shop was opened in July 2007 by Rupert & Emma Evans after they gave up their corporate careers in London to move back to Emma’s family farm. Initially the old milking parlour was converted into a small farm shop and café with the help of a rural enterprise grant from DEFRA. In 2013 we expanded the business into a purpose built, and much bigger premises which now has a large 100 seat café overlooking the beautiful Staffordshire countryside. Emma’s parents David & Joyce Boden continue to run the beef and arable enterprise and supply the farm shop with their own home reared beef.

Both our parents are from farming families. Muddy Boots is part of the farm that our great-grandfather first bought in the 1930s. During the 1950s our grandma started the first ‘farm shop’ on the farm, selling freshly harvested vegetables from the back door of the farm house. Muddy Boots started in 2004 in our family tent, with mum selling raspberries. The following year, we moved production into a poly tunnel, and expanded our range of fresh local fruit, veg and other produce. Today we have a farm shop, café, adventure play area and pottery painting studio, with the whole family actively involved in the day-to-day running of the business.
